On Saturday, December 10, 2016, SF REIKI CENTER partnered with The Shanti Project to provide Reiki services to Shanti's clients living with cancer and HIV. The event took place at the historic Women's Building in the Mission District in San Francisco, CA. We provided Reiki to 17 clients. We had six Reiki tables, with 2-3 volunteers at each table. The clients received 30-minute sessions each.
Our volunteers included both SF REIKI CENTER students, as well as students from other Reiki schools in the Bay Area. Our clients ranged in age, and we also served clients who are primarily Spanish- and Cantonese- speakers. Some clients receive Reiki on a regular basis and others were new to the experience. A few folks came with family members and caretakers; it was great to be able to provide a holistic model of care that includes not just the patients, but those closest to them as well.
Shanti's clients came to Reiki with a variety of issues: recent biopsies, anxiety, stress, and a desire to incorporate more self-care into their lives. Our volunteers listened and held space for each client and their situations. There was a lot of love and laughter throughout the day. The clients expressed gratitude and many asked when were we having the next event! Lily Tsen, of Margot Murphy Women's Cancer Program said “Everyone loved their sessions, it made all of the client’s day. Thank you, thank you, thank you SF REIKI CENTER” and especially Marian Isel Barragan, “she was so thoughtful with every detail creating a great Reiki share morning.”
And many thanks to Lily Tsen too of Shanti's Margot Murphy Women's Cancer Program for her assistance, and also for bringing coffee for our volunteers! I am full of gratitude for all the volunteers who spent their rainy Saturday being of service.
