What does it mean to be a Reiki Master Teacher?

I remember the first time I felt the calling to teach. It was in 2013, when my teacher Brian came to San Francisco to teach classes. Afterward, I would mentor the students, and together we ran the Reiki Clinic.

It actually took me a full year to finally ask Brian to take me on as a Master candidate. During that time, I reflected often on his words: If you choose to become a Reiki Master Teacher, you commit to being available to your students, and you commit to a lifetime of service.

He also explained how rigorous the training would be—2,000 client hours, countless classes, and a thesis project. I remember thinking, I already earned a Master’s degree in school… do I really have to do all this to become a Reiki Master Teacher?

And his answer was simple: Yes.

I am forever grateful to have been Brian’s first Master candidate.

This has been on my mind lately because last month I welcomed two new Master candidates: Angela Gallegos-Castillo, PhD and Ritu Mahindru. Just as Brian once spoke to me, I now share that same conversation with my students. Angela will be building her practice in Berkeley, and Ritu is opening the LA Reiki Center. Starting in January, I’ll be traveling to LosAngeles every three months to support her work—stay tuned! Follow LA Reiki Center on Instagram »
