Joy in Connection: How Reiki and Community Heal and Empower

As we step into July, I’ve been reflecting on the essential human need for connection and community—and what happens when that’s missing. I’ve also been considering how the practice of Reiki helps bring light, healing, and a deeper sense of belonging into our lives.

When I’m disconnected from community, it’s easy to feel stuck—in a place where the future feels bleak, and negativity and self-judgment creep in. That was my experience before I found Reiki in 2010. While I tried to stay positive, I often carried sadness and anger beneath the surface.

This reflection was sparked by the joy and solidarity I experienced during Pride Month. I attended the Trans March and marched in the Pride Parade with friends and allies, surrounded by cheers and celebration. I felt proud, open, and at home in my body—and I recognized just how much Reiki has supported my journey to that place.

As I walked, I contemplated the theme “Joy is resistance.” Living in San Francisco, a city known for embracing diversity, I’m grateful for the community we have here. But I’m also deeply aware of the challenges facing our transgender and immigrant communities nationwide. In the face of fear and injustice, how do we continue to show up with joy? We do it together—in connection, in community, and with love.

I’ll never forget my first Reiki session. In the midst of grief and isolation, I experienced a radiant white light surrounding me, and with it came peace, a sense of being held, and quiet support. That moment changed everything.

As we move into this new month, I invite you to reflect on your own sources of connection, healing, and joy. May we continue to walk together—hand in hand—in compassion and strength.

Always grateful,
Christopher Tellez
